Expand Your Leadership Skills

The program offers hands-on learning and interactive experiences focused on developing leadership skills, creating innovative teaching and coaching pedagogies and building an inclusive culture among students and athletes. Participants will learn from University of the Pacific faculty, coaches, staff and affiliated subject matter experts. In addition to learning strategies for being effective coaches and teachers, participants will learn important life and work skills. 

During the program, participants will develop individual leadership styles, learn how to effectively coach others and develop teaching philosophies, as well as learning how to transfer those skills to work and life situations. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate in teams to present their projects on the last day of the program. 

Curriculum

The following are targeted learning outcomes for the program:

  1. Demonstrate improved communication skills
  2. Identify techniques for motivating team members and effective collaboration
  3. Design a training/teaching plan and execute the plan within a team
  4. Demonstrate the ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  5. Become certified in CPR

By program completion, students should have a greater understanding of the skills required to be a successful teacher and coach and be able to apply those skills across all facets of life. Leading by example and having an ability to elevate teammates through collaboration and motivation will prepare students for the world beyond high school.

Planned Topics

Planned topics include a focus on team building, with sessions on collaboration and group dynamics providing a foundation for overcoming adversity and receiving and delivering constructive criticism. Future teachers and coaches will develop their own individualized leadership philosophies and learn how their individual communication styles and positions impact group dynamics. An emphasis on preparation is demonstrated through CPR certification, providing students a lifelong skill that may be valuable when they least expect.

Alyssa A. Wray has over a decade of experience in higher education and currently serves as the Assistant Director of Program Development and Operations in Benerd College of University of the Pacific. Her work focuses on program design, operational strategy, and creating meaningful learning experiences that support student success. A first-generation college graduate and Stockton native, Alyssa is passionate about expanding access to education and fostering inclusive, engaging learning environments for students and educators alike.
