Alumni Spotlight: Tristan Blackmon ’17 COP

Tristan Blackmon

Whitecaps FC Defender Set to Compete in Concacaf Champions Cup Final.

Tristan Blackmon ’17 and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC are headed to the Concacaf Champions Cup Final on Sunday, June 1 at 6:00 PM PT, where they’ll compete for one of the most prestigious titles in North American soccer. For Blackmon, a veteran MLS defender, this marks his second appearance in the tournament’s final—and a chance to capture the trophy that narrowly eluded him in 2020.

Before becoming a pro, Blackmon built his foundation at the University of the Pacific, where he played 70 matches for the Tigers, scoring 16 goals and recording nine assists. Originally recruited as a forward, he made a pivotal switch to right back during his sophomore year—a move that set the stage for his professional career.

“I left Pacific a much different person than the one I walked in as,” says Blackmon. “The environment, coaches, and teammates helped me grow into the person and player I am today. That switch to right back changed everything.”

Blackmon credits Pacific coaches Ryan Jorden, Jordan Ferrell, and Matt Gow for believing in his potential and guiding him through both personal and athletic challenges. “They saw a vision for me even when I couldn’t. I finally stopped rebelling, trusted them, and it made all the difference.”

Since graduating, Blackmon has continued to rise. A highlight came in 2022, when he scored the winning penalty in the Canadian Championship Final against Toronto FC. Now, with another final ahead, he remains focused. “I want to win the trophy. That’s all I’m thinking about. I’ve been here before—and I’m ready.”

To current Pacific students dreaming of their future, Blackmon offers this advice: “Ask yourself how bad you want it. Sacrifice the distractions, focus on the details, and commit fully. You may not control the outcome, but you can always control your effort.”

As he prepares for the biggest game of his career, Blackmon is proud to carry the Pacific spirit with him. “The support of the Pacific community means everything—this game, and every game. I hope I’m making the Tiger community proud.”
