McGeorge launches inaugural cohort for Hybrid Evening JD Program in fall 2026

McGeorge School of Law offers a Hybrid Evening JD Program for students who need a flexible schedule to pursue their legal education. Scholarships are available to help finance your education. Please contact our financial aid office for more information.

In fall 2026, McGeorge School of Law welcomed the inaugural cohort of its Hybrid Evening JD Program. The hybrid schedule allows students more flexibility in balancing their education and personal lives. Additionally, for those students who live outside of the Sacramento area, the hybrid program permits adaptability in their schedules because students can stay in Sacramento for only one night a week and head home after the Tuesday evening class.

In recent years, innovations in teaching and new understandings about online learning have played a central role in how the curriculum is delivered. McGeorge School of Law is utilizing the technology available to students and faculty to permit for a more convenient, but no less effective, method of instruction that provides access to legal education for all.

The day and evening divisions have essentially the same curriculum, faculty, and methods of instruction, and maintain the same scholastic standards and degree requirements.

 

Hybrid Evening JD program At-A-Glance

  • Hybrid Evening JD program format: Two nights per week in person, plus two evenings remote
  • Fall and spring classes Monday through Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Summer classes in a condensed format, including interesting electives
  • Required courses taught by experienced, full-time professors
  • Access to essentially the same learning opportunities available to full-time students
  • Fall term runs from about the third week in August through just before Thanksgiving. Final exams will take place during the first two weeks of December.

The day and evening divisions have essentially the same curriculum, faculty, and methods of instruction, and maintain the same scholastic standards and degree requirements. With the hybrid program format, students only need to be on campus two evenings a week, offering greater flexibility than the traditional four-night schedule.

How to Apply

When will I be in class?

During the academic year, classes for students in the Hybrid Evening JD program are typically offered on Monday through Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Classes are held in person on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and remotely on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. 

To stay on track to graduate in four years, students also take summer school classes during two to three summers. At times, Hybrid Evening JD program upper-division students opt to take some daytime courses during their third or fourth year, as their work/family schedule permits. There are some opportunities to take classes online or on weekends.

What classes will I take?

Hybrid Evening JD program students take the same courses as day students, arranged to fit into the evening hours during a four-year period. Below are sample first- and second-year schedules:

  • Monday: Torts (2 units in person) and Skills Lab (1 unit in person)
  • Tuesday: Civil Procedure (1 unit in person) and Global Lawyering Skills I (1 unit in person)
  • Wednesday: Torts (2 units distance)
  • Thursday: Civil Procedure (1 unit distance) and Global Lawyering Skills I (1 unit distance)
  • Total: 5 in-person units and 4 units distance 
  • Monday: Criminal Law (2 units in person) and the Legal Profession (1 unit in person)
  • Tuesday: Civil Procedure (1 unit in person) and Global Lawyering Skills II (1.5 units in person)
  • Wednesday: Criminal Law (2 units distance)
  • Thursday: Civil Procedure (1 unit distance) and Global Lawyering Skills II (1.5 units distance)
  • Total: 5.5 in-person units and 4.5 distance units

 

  • Monday: Contracts (2 units in person)
  • Tuesday: Global Lawyering Skills III (3 units in person)
  • Wednesday: Contracts (2 units distance)
  • Thursday: Statutes & Regulations (3 units distance)
  • Total: 5 in-person units and 5 distance units
  • Monday: Constitutional Law (2 units in person)
  • Tuesday: Property (2 units in person)
  • Wednesday: Constitutional Law (2 units distance)
  • Thursday: Property (2 units distance)
  • Total: 4 in-person units and 4 distance units

Accelerated Program (3.5 Years)

Some Hybrid Evening JD program students opt to take additional credits during summer and the third and fourth year to accelerate their graduation date by one semester, meeting the degree requirements in three-and-a-half years, rather than four. This is permitted without special approval; however, the Registrar's Office always needs to have a correct expected graduation date on file for each student.

Switching from Hybrid Evening JD program to Three-Year JD Program

Upon satisfactory completion of the first year of study, students may apply for transfer between the day and evening programs. The Assistant Dean for Students will consider academic performance to date in making her determination. Students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA will be permitted to switch.

International Students

JD students with an F-1 Visa must enroll with at least 12 units if attending the full-time program, or at least eight (8) units if attending the Four-Year JD Program.

Bar Exam

Enrollment in the hybrid Four-Year JD Program will render you ineligible to sit for the New York Bar Exam.
