Advising Tips (for Pre-Law Advisors)

Sometimes it helps to have a few extra tips in your back pocket. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Think of us as a resource. We are always happy to collaborate with you to best support your students—please don’t hesitate to reach out at mcgeorge@pacific.edu.
  2. Take time to develop a deeper understanding of the law schools in your region, including what they offer and the types of applicants they aim to serve. This assessment should extend beyond LSAT scores and cumulative GPAs. Use LSAC data to track where your students ultimately enroll.
  3. Having a working knowledge of basic financial aid concepts is essential to help students make true, side-by-side comparisons. Consider inviting admissions and financial aid professionals to present alongside you, giving students a clear overview of the process and key do’s and don’ts.
  4. Set aside dedicated time to support students with letters of recommendation. More personalized letters are especially impactful, and it’s meaningful to see an advisor or professor thoughtfully advocate for a student.
  5. Participate in events hosted by LSAC and law schools, as they often provide valuable insights and guidance.
  6. Consider volunteering to present with admissions professionals. These opportunities are a great way to build relationships and ensure we are working together to effectively support prospective law students.
